Created in Germany between the two world wars, The Green Table was one of the first modern ballets with a social commentary.  With the dark imagery and simplicity of the Bauhaus style,  it became a riveting and timeless  commentary on the futility of war and the horrors it causes.

Restaging The Green Table is not our goal, but rather it is a  jumping off point for our own original choreography, improvisation and conversation about social justice and finding our own avenues to peace in the 21st Century.

For example, in the original ballet, Kurt Jooss used gestures and body posturing as a building block of the opening diplomats scene. Fists pound, performers lean across the table, do hitch kicks in the air, and point at each other with forceful body language. Our opening scene takes gestures and poses of politicians as shown in the pages of The New York Times this summer and evolves from there.
